Preventing cancer

A couple buying fruitAt least half of all cancers are potentially preventable, which means there are tremendous opportunities for helping people avoid the disease.

Cancer Research UK conducts a wide range of research into the causes of cancer and boasts some of the world's leading experts in this field. Our work includes large-scale population studies to assess the role of environmental and dietary factors in the development of cancer.

We are also at the cutting edge of research to develop ways of preventing cancer, for example through vaccination or medication.

Highlights in this area:

  • Cancer Research UK is working in partnership with others to examine the links between diet and cancer risk in half a million people across Europe. The study has already shown that red and processed meat can increase the risk of bowel cancer.

  • We hope to improve the early detection of ovarian cancer by co-funding a national screening trial called UKCTOCS. The trial is testing whether a blood test for a molecule called CA125 (a marker of ovarian cancer) and ultrasound scanning can save more lives from the disease.
